Mums and kids in Epsom and Ewell

Outdoor activities

If your children are adventurous and enjoy the outdoor life Epsom and its surroundings have a lot to offer your family. Being on the edge of the Green Belt Epsom has plenty of open space in which the children can let off steam and families can enjoy walks or cycle rides.

The largest open space is Epsom Downs, famous for its race course - kite flying is a favourite amongst youngsters and adults alike, there are walks to explore, wildlife to see, model aeroplanes to watch and horses to admire (you need to keep off the horse tracks, for safety). There is a kiosk for ice creams and teas and on certain days of the year a funfair can be found. There are also several pub revues offering refreshment.

Epsom Common also has a lot to offer families living in, or visiting, Epsom. There are miles of walks and bridle ways, plenty of wildlife including frogs, herons and deer, and two ponds, one of which can be fished if you apply for a permit. Children can use their imaginations and can be Amazon explorers, pirates or dinosaurs among the trees.

Horton Country Park has trails to follow and even orienteering maps for the more adventurous amongst us. The paths are easy to cycle along and free of traffic which makes it safe and definitely more relaxing for parents. There are leaflets available at the ranger's hut on walks to follow and it is fascinating to learn some of the history of the area, for example, did you know that Butcher's Grove, a wood on the Circular Walk in the park, dates from the Middle Ages and is so named because it contains an area of Hornbeam coppice which provided the only wood that was used for Butchers' chopping boards?

The Chessington Countryside Walk is a five mile circular walk through Horton Country Park, Green Lane (Chessington), Chessington Wood, Ashtead Common and Epsom Common.

Another walk for those with any energy left is along the Hogsmill river. With the help of The Hogsmill leaflet you can explore the history and meadow landscape along this green corridor. There is something for everyone to enjoy.

Epsom and Ewell also boast several parks, some with ponds such as Rosebery Park and Ewell Court , others with sports facilities such as basket ball, tennis , football e.g. Court Recreation Ground and Alexandra Park, and even a mini golf course( if you bring your own putter and balls - at Alexandra Park). If you want a tranquil spot without cycles or dogs(at least that is the theory) try Elizabeth Welchman Gardens, off Downs Road. There is no play equipment but is ideal for picnics and using up excess energy.

There is so much to do outdoors in the Borough this can only offer you and your children a taster - get out there and make the most of what's on your doorstep.
