Medical Education.

The Practice is committed to medical education.

We usually have GP Registrars working in the practice. These are fully qualified Doctors with several years of hospital experience attached to the Practice for a year. Drs.Stott, Cowlard and Bunn are approved Trainers in General Practice who work closely with the Registrars during their attachment.

On occasions you may be asked to see your own Doctor in the presence of a senior medical student from St. George's Hospital. You do have the right to be seen in private, but we all appreciate your help in training our future Doctors.

The partnership education policy is also fully committed to further education of our nurses and reception staff.

The History of the Practice

The Practice was first established in Epsom in 1885. Until 1940 the Doctors held surgeries in their own homes when Dr. Lown started practising from a flat at 52 High Street where he was joined by Dr. Wild whose house had suffered bomb damage. This became the main surgery. In 1970 the adjoining flat was leased and the number of Partners increased from 3 to 4 in 1979, 5 in 1986, 6 in 1988 and 7 in 1991.In1982 we became a training practice , training Doctors who have completed hospital training before they joined their own practice.

By 1988 the Practice had out grown its High Street premises and moved to Cedars cottage in Church Street. In 1991 we moved to the Old Cottage Hospital to expand the services available at the Surgery.

The History of the Cottage Hospital.

The first Epsom Cottage Hospital was opened on 24th April 1873 in Penbroke Cottage, Pikes Hill. It had 8 beds. In 1877 it moved to two cottages in Hawthorn Place by the old railway station. Then in 1887 a referendum was held to decide how to celebrate the Jubilee, and it was decided to build a permanent Cottage Hospital. The building was opened by HRH Princess Mary Adelaide, Duchess of Teck on 11th July 1887. It was closed by the Regional Health Authority in1988, when the New Epsom and Ewell Cottage Hospital was opened at West Park. The building was reopened by the Practice in 1991.

A fuller account of the history of the Cottage Hospital and of health care in Epsom is given on the information page - A Century of Community Health Care which is sponsored by the Epsom Day Surgery Unit
