HELP US KEEP OUR UNIQUE SYSTEM OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Dear Resident,
At our A.G.M. in March we made several appeals for residents to involve themselves with the R.A. movement in both the Ward and the Borough. This is a great way for you to get involved with the local community, and to understand the issues which concern residents in our very attractive part of Epsom. We need your help

We need people to serve on the our committee. There are at presently 10 members of the Committee (6 men, 4 ladies) and we would like to fill the 4 vacancies and to introduce some new blood ! The responsibilities are neither onerous nor time consuming: we meet once a month in a friendly atmosphere at South Hatch. What all members have in common is a desire to pursue the ideal of local independence from national party politics in local government and to support the only independent Council, run by residents, in the Country. ...

We also need people wishing to be considered as prospective RA councillors for our Ward.

Councillors nominated by the College Ward Residents Association share our enthusiasm to maintain and develop the independence of our Council. The time involvement is greater than that of a Committee member. but it depends very much on the individual's interests and how these interests dovetail in with those of fellow Ward and Borough RA Councillors. We can make available to you information regarding the role of a Councillor in the Borough together with details of the expenses paid for these duties, and arrange for you to meet some of the present RA councillors.

If anyone is interested would you please contact me on 01372 723443 or any CWRA Committee member. You are encouraged to come to a Committee meeting as an observer to see the wide range of topics we cover, and our determination ot fight for the interests of all those living in College Ward. After that, if you would like to join the Committee, we can almost certainly use any special skills you have!

Obviously we would welcome anyone interested. In the past, most new committee members and councillors have been people of more "mature" years, and we encourage such people to work with us. But we would also welcome younger people, both men and women, who could also make a great contribution towards our work, and get a lot out of it too!

Yours sincerely,

Colin Bird Chairman CWRA

CALL CENTRE

If you have a particular problem or want to report something just pick up the 'phone and dial the Town Hall on 01372 732000 Your call will be logged onto a database and monitored by the Officer concerned who will inform you of progress and /or the outcome.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT REFORM

Public consultation showed the majority of you favoured a non-elected mayor and each ward having a councillor representation on all committees. The new committee structure will be fully operational in September.

HIGHWAY MATTERS

"Haunching" (that's re-defining the edge of the road) will take place in Longdown Lane South. We have expressed our concerns about the traffic backing up in Windmill Lane which makes even a left hand turn very difficult. We shall inform you of progress in our next Newsletter.

RAINBOW CENTRE UPDATE

No ! it isn't being pulled down, just re-developed to bring you a facility more in keeping with the 21st Century. Due to the rising water table, there is a small delay on its re-opening date but you will be able to try out the new pool etc.., in early winter next year.

SURREY POLICE

Home Beat Officers will be replaced by Reassurance Officers who have been specifically trained for their task of interfacing with the public. A proposal to reduce the divisions from 7 to 4 means Epsom will be part of the Northern Division. Look out for further information in our next Newsletter.
