Ben Rosow -- 31 May 2008 -- Email: ben@therosows.com

Hello, I am a US Citizen who was born with dual citizenship in Epsom in 1955. The house I was born in was at 121 Longdown Lane South. Google maps shows no house there and I am guessing that a row of houses was torn down to make way for the Epsom Golf Club. Would any of you local people know about the Epsom Golf Club and when it was either built or expanded?

I am hoping to come to Epsom for a visit some time soon.

Thanks in advance,

Ben in New Orleans

Can anybody help with information about the DANIELS family? My grandmother ran a sweet shop on Epsom high st ( the choc.shop at 1B) in the thirties and my great grandmother Emma Daniels may have owned the shop at 83 before this. I would also be interested in any thing on my Italian ancestors the MASPERO family who were also traders - possibly jewellers? Does anybody remember my mother Peggy HUNTER? would be grateful for anything!!!

John -- 20 February 2008 -- Email: john.seymour@thermofisher.com

Looking for details of Frederick Thomas Bruce and Mary Moore that married in Epsom in 1917. Granny and Grandad to me. Fred came from East Anglia ( I think ) and maybe met and married Mary in the Epsom area, probably after he left an Epsom hospital. Fred was gassed during the 1st world war.

If anyone has a contact name or address where I would be able to purchase a copy of the marriage certificate, it would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards, John.

I am trying to trace members of the Bevan family who were living in Ewell, Epsom around the time of WW2. Does anyone know of any descendants of George Henry Bevan and Olive Mary Bevan (nee Hooper)? They had a number of children, including I believe, their eldest son called George Leslie Bevan who was born in Haverfordwest, Wales in 1923 but who was tragically killed in 1944 in Italy at the Battle of Cassino. He was only 20 years old when he died. I would love to hear from anyone who recognises any of these names. Many, many thanks.

Does anyone remember an Asian gentleman living in the Epsom area in 1984? His appearance at the time was fairly striking he was tall and thin, with shoulder length curly black hair. He would probably be between 50 and 60 years now. In 1984 he was a guru/spiritual teacher, involved in spirituality, meditation and diet. Is there anyone who knows someone of that description. I met him in June 1984 and would very much like to make contact again. A lady from London brought me to meet him but I then lost all contact. Thank you for your help.

Hi. Its John Dennis here from Hedon, a little market town in East Yorkshire. Mine is not an ancestor search but it is for an old friend called Angelina !!. Seriously, Angelina is/was a 1920's Foden steam-driven Lorry, which an old friend of mine owned. He was 'Lorry' (Lawrence) Brooksbank who had a haulage business in East Yorkshire (hence the spelling of his nick name) He alway had Foden trucks in his business and his hobby was refurbishing old examples and also Dutch fairground organs. Every Christmas he would bring his Organs and Angelina to the old market place to entertain our shoppers and schoolkids. He had converted the lorry into a sort of traction engine by extending the roof of the cabin forward and installing a great big flywheel on the top so it would drive a belt, in turn to power the organ. In the late 70's he became ill and couldn't handle these big machines any more so I sold them on his behalf (in a previous life I was a partner in an agricultural auctioneering business). I remember the organs went to the lake district to a farmer, and Angelina to a firm of Hauliers in your area called Hardwick & Son of Cox Lane West Ewell. Does anyone reading this have any knowledge of Angelina or Hardwick's ? I'm doing a piece for our little local museum on old Lorry Brooksbank who died around 1980 and I'd love to re-establish contact with Angelina. A photo or two would be great. I hope someone can help. From recollection Mr Hardwick was a very big man with an even bigger low loader - he came with a carrier bag full of dosh and he intended to buy!! Thanks in anticipation

John

Hi there from Australia. I'm trying to trace the family of my husband, Bruce (born in Ewell 1943 but now disconnected from any family members) who lived in both Ewell and Epsom. His parents died more than 10 years ago. His mother was Vivian Audrey Knight (nurse), born Epsom 1915, died West Ewell 1982. Her father's name was Albert Victor Knight, a male nurse who worked at the nearby hospitals from sometime in the early 1900s. He may even have been born in Epsom. Vivian's known siblings were Felix, Doris (born 1906), Edna, Robert, John and Ronald plus another male Knight. I do not know their mother's name. If anyone has any information on any members of this KNIGHT family in Epsom from before 1900 to the present, I'd really appreciate a return email. Many thanks in anticipation.

I am searching for information about my great- grand parents who were killed in a fire on Epsom Downs some time between 1883 and 1890 +/- a year or two they were possibly Gypsies by the name of Webster?. The family we believe came from Norfolk and the children of the couple were put into an orphanage. The fire would no doubt have been reported in local newspapers at the time. One of the children (my grandfather) eventually moved up to Yorkshire to live and I believe at least two of his siblings may have moved to Canada or Australia.

Hello from Canada! I know this is a long shot, but I wonder if there is anyone who may have known my parents, Cecil and Marion Sharpe. My mother's maiden name was Garhard. They were born in or around 1930 and left England around 1956/57. My Dad was a SGT in the Territorial Army for 4 years. The stamp on his discharge papers is dated 1956, so I guess they left shortly after he got out of the army. If anyone remembers either one of them, please contact me at karolharding@hotmail.com I am planning a trip to Epsom next year and it would be wonderful to be able to talk to someone who knew my Mother or Father. I know I have distant relatives in Epsom and maybe one of them might remember. Thank you for all your help in advance. Karoline

I have found a record on the internet of a cricket match in August 1888 between Epsom College and the Rev. W. Cecil Wood's XI in which a Bettison (wrong spelling?) was listed in the latter team. I am looking for anyone who might have heard of a prtrait studio located in Epsom. It was called Regal Portrait Studio. We have a picture of someone in a military uniform. We think he may be related to us somehow, and are wondering if there is any way we can get in touch with someone who might have any records from the studio. We have a call number on the back of the picture.

Phillip Sear -- 30 July 2001 -- Email: sear@sear.screaming.net

Does anyone have any recollection of the Scotcher family who lived at 48 Horton Hill, Epsom between the mid-1930s and early 1960s? John Scotcher and his wife Ethel (the latter being my great-great aunt) had three children, Olive, Ivy and Harold, who if still alive would be in their mid-80s. Harold (who was in the Navy during the War) married Florence Walmsley in Epsom in November 1941. The family had moved there from Lindfield in Sussex. Any information or leads most gratefully received. With thanks from Phillip Sear, who can be e-mailed on sear@sear.screaming.net

Jackie Martin (nee Illman) -- 28 April 2001 -- Email: dwmartin@btinternet.com

Can anyone help with my search for my ancestors. I have spent many months searching but so far have only drawn blanks. My late father Frank Leslie ILLMAN was born on 28th August 1926 at Middle House, Dorking Road, Epsom. His parents names were Frank and Edith Ellen ILLMAN. His mothers residence at his birth was as above but his fathers was a caravan, Hill Farm, Cheam, Epsom. My late father was sent away from his family at a very young age and could never remember them although he thought he may have had a sister Kathleen. If anyone out there has any information no matter how trivial it may be, could you please e-mail me at dwmartin@btinternet.com Thank you for any help you can give, I look forward to hearing from someone soon. Many Thanks

I have been researching my family history for some years now. I am a descendant of Charles SMART who was an Epsom farmer and property developer in the 1800s. Charles was born in Petworth, Sussex but lived in Epsom for all his adult life. Various members of the family lived in Church St, East Street and College Road. Charles SMART died in 1872 and is buried with his 3 wives in the Churchyard at St Martins. The Vestry Minutes show him to be a contemporary of William Furniss and also involved in the the demolishing of the old Watch House, the building of the present Clock Towner in 1849, and the filling in of the unsanitary pond in the middle of the street in 1854. Other names associated with this family are JAY, BANCE, BEALL, ADDS. I live in Australia and would love to hear from anyone with connections with this family or who has information about them. Regards Janine Heggie alder_gibson@msn.com.au

I am searching for information regarding my grandfathers' family. My grandfather was Bertie Charles Pease, born in Ewell in 1887. He attended the Ewell Infants School briefly in 1893. His siblings were: Mary, William, Allen, Alice, Ada,& Arthur. Their parents were William Pease, born 1849 in Wickford, Essex. I would appreciate any information. Thank you Cindy at SchroederRC@msn.com

I'm looking for information on a convent where my grandmother stayed when she was 6 years old. She was placed in a convent near Epsom/London at the age of 6, in 1907, until she was 16 and married my grandfather during the First World War. I would like to get the names of the convents in the area so that I can write to them with the above information. I am writing a Family History Book and would like more information on her side of the family. My grandfather's name was Robert Osborne Dorman. He was born on January 6th 1900 in Montreal.

Mark Stevenson -- 22 February 1999 -- Email: MXS@Walker.com

My father, Ivor Herbert Stevenson, went to a school in Epsom and apparently his name is on a board of award winners or something similar. He was born in 1909 so he would have gone to school in Epsom sometime between 1914 and 1925. Could anyone tell me which school it was likely to have been? I would like to find out more about his school days.
